If you’re a small business owner, tradesperson, or holiday let manager, you’ve probably asked:
“Do I really need to pay for waste collection?” or “Can I just take rubbish to the tip?”
The truth is: even if your business is home-based or low-waste, you’re still legally responsible for how you handle your waste. Whether it’s packaging, trade materials, or cleaning waste, you can’t use household bins.
This guide answers the most common questions about commercial waste collection for small businesses in Cumbria and The Lake District.
Do Small Businesses Need Their Own Waste Collection?
In short, yes. Under UK law, any waste generated through business activity must be:
Collected by a licensed waste carrier
Accompanied by a waste transfer note
Disposed of at an authorised site
This includes: home-based businesses, holiday lets and serviced properties, cafés, salons, and small retail units as well as trades like builders, decorators, and landscapers.
However, small businesses with fewer than 10 FTE (full-time equivalent) employees are temporarily exempt until the 31 March 2027. FTE counts the total hours worked by employees. For example, if full-time is 40 hours a week and you have four employees working 10 hours each, they add up to 1 FTE.
What Counts As Business Waste?
If it's created through work, it's business waste.
Here are some examples:
Packaging from products or stock
Cleaning waste from Airbnb or holiday rentals
Building offcuts, plasterboard, insulation
Shredded paperwork, invoices, printer cartridges
"Can I Take My Business Waste to the Tip?"
In most cases, no. Public household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) don’t accept commercial waste. Even small trades or home-based businesses must use licensed disposal routes.
